Mobile Caravan & Motorhome Habitation Checks Across Northern Ireland

Worried your caravan or motorhome might not be safe or road-ready?

A lot can go wrong when a touring vehicle hasn’t been thoroughly inspected. From hidden damp issues and gas leaks to faulty brakes or electrics, what you can’t see can cause the most trouble. Whether you're heading away for a weekend or preparing for a longer adventure, peace of mind starts with a proper habitation check.

Don’t Let Hidden Problems Ruin Your Trip

Even if everything looks fine on the surface, appliances can fail, water systems may leak, and gas fittings might no longer be compliant. Damp often goes unnoticed until it’s too late and by then, the damage is costly to fix. We've seen it time and again: customers putting off a habitation check, only to discover mould under floors or loose connections in gas lines.

And when something breaks mid-holiday, it doesn’t just ruin your plans. It can be dangerous.

Get It Checked. Get It Done Right.

At Thornhill Caravan & Motorhome Services, we carry out full, mobile habitation checks across Northern Ireland using the Mobile Caravan Engineers Association (MCEA) best practice checklist. That means everything gets checked, electrical systems, gas safety, damp levels, ventilation, appliances, brakes, lights, and more by trained professionals with a reputation for precision.

No guesswork. No rushed jobs. Just reliable, detailed inspections that make sure your caravan or motorhome is safe, compliant, and road-ready.

Frequently Asked Questions About Caravan Habitation Checks

Please email us at info@thornhillservices.co.uk or call us on 0782713819 if you cannot find an answer to your question.

  • What is a caravan habitation check?

A habitation check is a full inspection of the living area and safety systems in your caravan or motorhome. It includes checks on gas, electrics, water, ventilation, damp levels, and appliances to ensure everything is safe, compliant, and working as it should.

  • Do I need a habitation check every year?

Yes. Annual habitation checks are strongly recommended and often required to maintain your manufacturer warranty. Regular checks help catch faults early and ensure your vehicle is safe for use.

  • Do you carry out habitation checks at my home or storage site?

Yes. Thornhill Services is a mobile operation. We carry out habitation checks anywhere across Northern Ireland within approximately 60 miles of our base, at your home, storage yard, or seasonal pitch.

  • Do you inspect for damp?

Absolutely. Damp checks are a key part of every habitation inspection. We use professional tools to detect damp before it becomes visible, saving you from serious structural damage later on.

  • How long does a habitation check take?

Most habitation checks take around 2 to 3 hours depending on the size and condition of the vehicle. We’ll give you a clear time estimate when you book.

  • Can you check my vehicle if it’s over 20 years old?

No. We specialise in modern touring caravans and motorhomes. Unfortunately, we do not work on vehicles over 20 years old, horseboxes, or non-standard conversions.

  • What’s included in a habitation check?

We follow the Mobile Caravan Engineers Association (MCEA) checklist, which includes inspection of your gas and electrical systems, fire safety devices, water and waste systems, ventilation, appliances, windows and doors, bodywork, and a full damp test. It’s a comprehensive, item-by-item review to keep your van road-ready and safe.

  • What happens if you find a problem?

We’ll talk you through any issues we find and explain the next steps. In many cases, we can carry out the repair on-site or provide a no-obligation quote. You’re always in control, no hidden costs or pressure.

  • Do I get a report after the check?

Yes. Every habitation check comes with a detailed written report outlining all findings, including damp readings and any areas that may need attention.

  • Are habitation checks mandatory for insurance or warranty?

Some manufacturers require annual habitation checks to maintain warranty cover. Insurers may also ask for proof of regular servicing to process claims. Even if not mandatory, it’s strongly advised for safety, compliance, and resale value.

  • Can I book a habitation check even if I’m not going on holiday?

Absolutely. Many customers book checks during the off-season or while their caravan is in storage. It’s a great way to catch issues early before they become expensive to fix.

  • Do you cover every location in Northern Ireland?

We cover all of Northern Ireland within a 60-mile radius of Ballyclare. That includes areas like Antrim, Ballymena, Belfast, Larne, and surrounding towns. If you’re unsure, just give us a call and we’ll let you know.
